23rd November 2011
Richard Onslow, leading Francisca da Costa appeared before the Privy Council to represent Samuel Robie in his appeal against conviction.
Mr Robie was convicted of murder in July 2005 after a trial at the Supreme Court, Jamaica. He was sentenced to 15 years hard labour.
It was submitted that the conviction was unsafe because the Judge did not direct the jury as to the Appellant’s good character; the jury were not adequately directed on the identification evidence; remarks made in summing up may have prejudiced the Appellant; and the Appellant was inadequately represented.
The Court has adjourned to consider its judgement. Counsel were instructed by Dorsey and Whitney LLP.
