Previously Ian was a grade 4 prosecutor on the Western Circuit. He was regularly instructed to prosecute, often without a junior, cases such as murder, multiple arson with intent to endanger life, historical sexual offences and multiple rapes.
Those areas of instruction have continued following Ian taking silk in April 2011. Ian also advises and continues to act on behalf of private prosecutions brought by Local Authorities and Inshore Fisheries and Conservation Authorities.
Ian sits as a Recorder on the Western Circuit and is the Chambers Equality and Diversity Officer.
Reg v DeCosta (2009)
Prosecuted and secured the conviction of a man who murdered a fellow homeless alcoholic. Defence raised adult ADHD as the third aspect of dysfunction with defendant in order to try and establish three features of the defendant’s character that could support defence of diminished responsibility.
Reg v Searle (2009)
Prosecuted and secured the conviction of a man who trawled the 'red light' area of Swindon selecting prostitutes whom he would detain in his vehicle, beat up and subsequently rape.
Reg v Rooprai, Dogra & Dogra (2009)
Prosecuted and secured the conviction of three defendants who embarked on firebombing campaign against those persons involved in a secret wedding between one defendant’s sister who was Sikh and her future husband who was Hindu and witnessed by a Muslim friend.
Reg v Larkin (2010)
Prosecuted and secured the conviction of defendant for manslaughter and arson. The defendant set light to his duvet following a drunken argument with his girlfriend. The resulting fire destroyed the defendant’s home and resulted in the death of the girlfriend.
Reg v Quincy (2010)
Along with Stewart Jones QC, prosecuted and secured the conviction of defendant who killed a friend out of revenge arising from false allegation of burglary made by the deceased. The defendant presented a number of challenges to admissions made to police, doctors and escorting police officers.
Reg v Gittins and others (2010)
Prosecuted and secured the conviction of defendants involved in shooting incident. In varying ways the defendants arranged for the victim to be lured into a trap and ambushed. A firearm was discharged at the car, narrowly missing the intended target but wounding a passenger in the vehicle.
Reg v Coleman (2011)
Prosecuted and secured the conviction of a lorry driver, for causing death by dangerous driving. The driver conducted a ‘U’ Turn on a dual carriageway and caused a collision that led to the death of two people.
Reg v Haynes (2011)
Prosecuted and secured the conviction of a former soldier for a sequence of rapes and abductions over a 6 month period. Leading Colin Meeke of Wiltshire CPS.
Reg v Conan (January 2009)
Along with Nigel Lickley QC, defended man accused of murdering his partner and young son.

Along with Nigel Lickley QC defended leading defendant in large drug supply conspiracy based in Wiltshire.

Defended man accused of attempting to murder his former wife by strangulation with a dog lead.
