Public Law & Regulatory

Sunyana was first introduced to regulatory work during her pupillage when working with Hamish Dunlop on a trading standards prosecution and for Robert Horner on a prosecution under the Town and Country Planning Act 1990. She has since sought to develop her practice in the public law and regulatory discipline in the following areas:

Animal Welfare: Sunyana regularly defends in Animal Cruelty cases brought by the RSPCA and Local Councils.

Anti-social behaviour orders: She has represented both Local Authorities as well as individuals in anti-social behaviour applications in both the Magistrates' Court and County Courts.

Benefit Fraud: Sunyana has been instructed to act for both local authorities and defendants in benefit fraud trials which have included the Department of Work and Pensions & Local Council Prosecutions.

Education: Sunyana has acted as a legal clerk for Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire County Councils on Selection Appeals Panels and seeks to further develop her interest in Education Law.

Licensing: She acted for the premises licence holder in a licensing appeal hearing in a high profile case in Dorset as a junior to Guy Opperman.

Police Law: In 2009 Sunyana successfully defended a police dog handler charged with a serious case of mistreatment of his trainee dog. In addition, in 2010, she successfully represented a police officer under s.3ZB of the Road Traffic Act 1988.

Social Housing:  As well as regularly appearing in possession actions in landlord and tenancy cases on behalf of local authorities, social housing landlords and individuals, Sunyana has also acted in forfeiture proceedings, enforcement hearings and applications for anti-social behaviour injunctions.

Sunyana acts for Victim Support in Criminal Injuries Compensation Appeal on a pro bono basis.
